Goals for the Talk

AI researchers have long aimed at automating scientific discovery, but early work was criticized for its focus on historical tasks.

In this talk, I will:

• give evidence that computational discovery methods are now producing new scientific knowledge

• examine the roles that humans have played in making these new discoveries

Analysis suggests that future systems for computational discovery should include more explicit support for human intervention.
